Thank you for contacting us with a well-thought out email regarding your concern with the naming of the Sea of Japan / the East Sea. Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia, and we often have articles that are subject to dispute by others.
Geographical naming on a global encyclopedia is a complicated issue, as you might realize. The Sea of Japan / East Sea is one example. The Persian Gulf / Arabian Gulf is another that comes to mind. In such disputes, there is no ultimate single authority that decides; instead, the Wikipedia community discusses and comes to a consensus about the best naming convention.
The name "Sea of Japan" was agreed upon by Wikipedians in 2005 as part of a discussion on what to name that body of water <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Naming_conventions_%28Korean%29/Disputed_names>, as well as many discussions in the years after. On the English Wikipedia, the "Sea of Japan" has been chosen over "East Sea" due to it being more commonplace in the English language, as well as being the name recognized by the International Hydrographic Organization. It is realized that this naming is disputed (we actually have an article about it at <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_of_Japan_naming_dispute>) and that the solution won't appease everyone; however, a single name has to be chosen, and the one most used by the English Wikipedia's audience is the one that is currently in use.
Since article content is not controlled by a central authority, we do not resolve page name disputes via email. You may bring up your objections on the talk page of the Sea of Japan <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sea_of_Japan>, but be advised that the naming conventions preclude any discussion of this issue.
