Thank you for your email. We are aware of the historic naming dispute over this sea. However, the IHO - the international body in charge of naming oceans - decided in 2012 that the name should stay as "Sea of Japan." The IHO will not address this issue again until 2017. Until then, it would be less confusing for our readers (especially in this specific story which isn't focused on the dispute) to stick with the current official name of the sea.
