This issue has been raised before and I have discussed it with relevant correspondents and editors.
Like most other international publications - with the exception of those in South Korea - we have always used Sea of Japan, although we would refer to the East Sea in an article about the dispute itself.
The UN has not made a ruling on the dispute but it has said it will continue to use the Sea of Japan because it is the the most widely used term, until the two countries can resolve the disagreement.
Likewise, the Guardian will continue to use Sea of Japan. I realise you may not be happy with this position but I hope it goes some way to explaining it.
