I appreciate your comments regarding the ¡°East Sea/Sea of Japan¡± discussion.  As you mention, this disagreement in labeling has been going on for some years now.  I am personally sympathetic to the Korean position on this question.  At the same time, I also defer to our Student Atlas geography author and consultant who interprets the  profession¡¯s opinion which is an attempt to balance political appropriateness with consistency for instructional purposes.  The most recent designation used in our Student Atlases is "Sea of Japan (East Sea)".  I've passed on a recent recommendation to use "Sea of Japan/East Sea" on our maps.




 


I am not aware of the professional position on the Dokdo Island labeling.  I am forwarding your information as well to our author.
