Dear Seungah

Reference CAS-5248710-CNMKTW

Thank you for getting in touch about the BBC News website.

I understand you¡¯re unhappy with the use of the name ¡®Sea of Japan¡¯ in the article ¡®S Korea-US military exercise held in the Sea of Japan¡¯.

In any story we cover we¡¯d aim to use language that is clear and easily understood by audiences. Sea of Japan is the term we generally use to describe the body of water between Japan and the Korean peninsula. However, when a story is predominantly of interest in Korea, or there is any scope for confusion, we write Sea of Japan/East Sea, in recognition that East Sea is the term used in Korea.

I appreciate you would prefer the map here to be labelled with ¡®East Sea¡¯ and I¡¯ve shared your comments with the relevant online staff, as well as senior management within BBC News, on our daily feedback report.

Many thanks once again for taking the time to contact us.

Kind regards

Sarah Firby
