The thing is, 'Sea of Japan' has to be written as 'East Sea', since the area is Korean territory.
'East Sea' first appeared in the historical document of Korea in B.C. 59, which was 70 years earlier than the year when the name of 'Japan' was officially first used.
Also, it is not appropriate to call the sea using one certain country's name since it meets four countries(South Korea, North Korea, Russia and Japan) on its border. It is reasonable enough to change 'Sea of Japan' to 'East Sea'.
