Dear bluebird,
Hello. This is Jinhwan Yoon from South Korea. While surfing the internet, I came to see an article explaining East China Sea from your website. The contents were fine, but I was unpleasant to see the map you had been using. In the map, the body of water between South Korea and Japan is described as 'Sea of Japan'. I want to inform you that the correct name of the sea is 'East Sea' since it has never been the territory of Japan.

Four countries - South Korea, Russia, Japan, and North Korea - are sharing the east sea. In particular, it consists of territorial waters of several countries and the exclusive economic zone(EEZ). International rules suggest that names of the land or sea shared by two or more countries should be determined through consultation between the countries concerned. If not, it is reasonable to write side-by-side the names that those countries use. The IHO(International Hydrographic Organization) and the UNCSGN(the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names) are the international organizations in charge of determining the standard names of the world's seas. They are also suggesting that it is ordinary principle to use each working name for the East Sea. Also, the term 'East Sea' has been used for more than 2000 years, and Samguksagi(ß²ÏÐÞÈÑÀ), King Dongmyeong's episode, Eight State Map(ø¢Ô³õÅÓñ) as well as a variety of historical maps and records support this fact. In contrast, the term 'Sea of Japan' or 'Mer du Japon' was first used in great universal geographic map(ÍÞæ¨Ø¿ÏÐîïÓñ) by Matteo Ricci in 1602. Various historical records prove that even Japanese had not recognized East Sea as Sea of Japan since then.

I'm afraid that if you keep using the map, people visiting your website will obtain wrong knowledge that the East Sea is the territory of Japan. It is highly important to deliver the right information of the history between Korea and Japan to future generations.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please text me back if you can't understand my purpose or have trouble making corrections.
Sincerely |
