Hello,

I recently visited your website, http://www.elmundo.es/documentos/2003/04/guerras_olvidadas/corea.html and was shocked because, you described Korean history as a colony of China for a long time.

Koreans established independent states throughout about 5,000 years since our first nation, Kojoseon(also spelled Gojoseon) was established in 2333 B.C. After Kojoseon came three kingdoms called Goguryeo, Baekje and Shilla. There was also the Gaya Confederacy and a few other tribal nations. Modern Korea still has various relics built during those times.

China carried out a national project called ¡®Studies of History and Geography of Northeast Borderland and a Series of Phenomena¡¯ (often shortened as ¡®Northeast Asia Project¡¯), from 2002 to 2006. This project was led by the Center for the Study of Borderland History and Geography under the Chinese Academy of Social Science with the participation of the committees of three provinces in Dongbei (formerly called Manchuria), including Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang. Although the Chinese government insisted that the purpose of the project was simply to do systematic research on the three provinces, the outcome raised tensions between China and Korea. The project attempted to incorporate Korea¡¯s ancient kingdoms of Gojoseon (2333 B.C.-108 B.C.), Goguryeo (37 B.C.-A.D. 668) and Balhae (A.D. 698- A.D. 926) into Chinese history.

Many Koreans think that China has attempted to cut Korea¡¯s 5,000-year-history in half by denying that Korean national identity derives from the ancient civilization of Goguryeo. Goguryeo was a prosperous kingdom that occupied the northern part of the Korean peninsula and large parts of Manchuria. The name Korea itself is derived from the Goryeo Dynasty (A.D. 918-A.D. 1392), which proclaimed to succeed Goguryeo. Koreans take pride in their Goguryeo heritage. Thus, China¡¯s denial of Goguryeo as a part of Korean history troubles the minds of Koreans. Even South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun mentioned his concern that this project might affect the relations between South Korea and China in a meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao in September 2006.

Through the project, China is seeking to incorporate the ancient Korean kingdom into a Chinese historical timeline, even claiming that the people of Goguryeo originated from the Chinese "han" tribe. Consequently, China is trying to rob 700 years of Korean history, which could seriously damage Korea's roots and heritage.

The seriousness of the situation lies in the fact that the Chinese government is taking the initiative in distorting history, making its political intentions clear. It seems obvious that the Chinese scheme under the name of the "Northeast Asia Project" is aimed at providing historical backup to Beijing's political concerns over the potential instability among the Korean-Chinese following Korean unification. The increasing number of North Korean defectors crossing the porous border into China in recent years is already causing problems to Chinese security and diplomatic authorities.
