Last December, my Korean friend Diana visited your museum as an enthusiast in French culture. She happened to visit the permanent exhibition on Asian culture. During her visit, she was caught by surprise and disappointment as she had told me after she came back to Korea. On your exhibition which display traditional clothings of Asian cultures, the information on the map regarding Northeast Asia was inaccurate and distorted.

작년 12월, 프랑스 문화에 관심이 많은 한국인 친구 다이에나가 귀하의 박물관을 찾았습니다. 그녀는 우연히 아시아 문화에 관한 상설 전시회장을 방문했습니다. 한국에 돌아와서 그녀가 제게 말하길 그녀가 박물관을 관람하는 동안 그녀는 놀랐고 실망감을 감출 수 없었다고 합니다. 귀하의 아시아의 전통 의복을 전시하는 곳에 동북아시아에 관한 지도의 정보가 잘못되었고 왜곡되어 표현되어 있었습니다.

The map I am talking about is a map of three Northeast Asian countries, Korea, China and Japan. You may check this image on the attached file. This map contains three errors. The first error is that the map does not show the border between Korea and China. This is very preposterous and incomprehensible because to myself as a Korean citizen, not showing the name and the border about my country is disregarding my country and my people. The second error is that you may know that Korea is divided into two, South and North. After the Korean war, an armistice was signed in 1953, and the military demarcation line(MDL) has been drawn on the border between South and North Korea. And the line leads to the DMZ(demilitarized zone), which has been acting as a boundary between the two. However, the map does not display the boundary between South and North Korea, in the same concept that you have not marked the border between the Korean peninsula and mainland China on the map. The third error is as follows. The same map describes Korea's 'East Sea(Mer de I'est)' as 'Sea of Japan(Mer du Japon)' on the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago.
Before I give you the general information regarding the errors described above, I would like to tell you what was even more surprising to me. As you may know, after the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown was over, you have re-opened the museum on June. I have asked my French friend Paul. whom I have met through VANK, to visit the museum. I asked for the favor because as far as I know of, some VANK members have already sent letters to rectify the errors, but nobody seemed to have received a reply from your museum regarding the errors, and I wanted to know if the errors had been corrected since Diana found the error last December. After Paul's visit this September, he told me that the description on the Asian exhibition remained same, unchanged. This is another reason I am sending this letter because this incident may result in serious problems.
From now on, I would like to state the general information about the map stated above, and the reasons why these errors should be rectified as soon as possible. About the first and the second case, how would you feel if the country name 'France' and the border in between the neighboring countries were not displayed in an exhibition in another country, but other neighboring countries' borders and names such as Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain were displayed? The absurd feeling you might get is what Koreans and myself would get. Isn't France a country that has risen through civil revolution? Koreans also achieved independence from the Japanese colonial rule in the last century, and even though there was a sad history of war between our own people, but we have pride as Koreans because we have achieved democratization by ourselves. For this reason, the preposterous error you have been neglecting on your exhibition may seem like your museum is disregarding Korea and Korean people.
Regarding the third error, this is also providing distorted and wrong information to your visitors of the museum regarding the geography of Korea. After finding out that your map still labels Korea's 'East Sea' as 'Sea of Japan.' I thought that I should tell the story about the 'East Sea.' You might wonder why I insist to use 'East Sea' rather than 'Sea of Japan'. For more information about the story of 'East Sea' you may refer to this site.

As you might have read the story from the link above, using a proper name for the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago is not simply a question of changing the name of a geographical feature. It is part of the national effort by the Korean people to erase the legacy of Japanese Imperialism and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from it. It is an absolute mistake to listen to just one side of the story and to blindly follow. If we leave these kinds of things alone, it causes serious problems that disturb the order of international society.
Also, for your reference, Dorling & Kindersley(https://www.dk.com), one of biggest textbook publishers, worldatlas.com, one of prominent online map provider, and one of the biggest map makers, National Geographic promised us that they would now use the name ’East Sea’. In addition, these web sites are already using the name, ’East Sea’ on their web site after we pointed out the error. Also, on August of 2019, the New York State Education Department updated a portion of the curriculum involving the East Sea. Initially there was no specific name that was used for the body of water when it taught in New York schools. Now, both names East Sea and Sea of Japan will be used when teaching about the region to promote sensitivity and understanding historical matters. You may refer to this site for more information.

I am not a public official working for the Korean government, and I am just writing this letter as a student and from the standpoint of someone who likes visiting museums around the world. In fact, personally, this is not my first time that I have found and rectified an obvious error about Korea. A description of the 'East Sea' in an article on the web site of the Department of Veterans' Affairs of the Australian Government had the same error too. Later on, after I have sent the letter last year, provided with reasonable grounds, the Department of Veteran's Affairs have rectified the error. As a member of VANK, and as a student, I respectfully request that you correct these information since the contents of your museum can plant false impression about Korea and Korean geography to the world citizens and students who visit your museum. Especially, I know that your museum was established in order to conserve, document, and enrich historic collection and to create bridges between cultures. Following this, however, for the national museum to leave alone such distorted information on Korea could reach over the museum and become seen as the fault of the French government. I am writing this to alert to you of how this could be viewed as a matter of France disregarding Korea and part of its sovereignty and geographical fact. I also believe that recognizing that the modern society uses the name ‘East Sea’ is moving toward a society that sees the world internationally without prejudice. 위에서 언급한 오류들에 대한 일반적인 정보를 서술하기 전에 제게 더욱 놀라웠던 일에 대해서 먼저 알려드리고자 합니다. 아시다시피 코로나-19 전염병 봉쇄기간이 끝난 이후 귀하의 박물관은 6월에 재개관한 것으로 알고 있습니다. 저는 반크를 통해 만나게 된 제 프랑스 친구 폴로 하여금 귀하의 박물관을 방문하길 부탁했습니다. 그에게 부탁한 이유는, 제가 아는 선에서, 어떤 반크 회원들이 이미 위의 오류들을 수정하기를 요청하는 서한을 보냈지만, 그 누구도 귀하의 박물관으로부터 오류에 관한 답장을 받지 못한 것으로 보입니다. 그리고 다이에나가 작년 12월에 오류를 발견하고 난 후 그 오류들이 시정되었는지에 대해서도 알고 싶었기 때문입니다. 폴이 올해 9월에 방문해서 확인했을 때, 아시아 전시관의 그 설명이 그대로였고, 변경되어있지 않음을 알려주었습니다. 이 사건이 심각한 문제를 초래할 수 있기 때문에 이는 이 서한을 보내는 또 다른 이유입니다.
이제부터는 귀하에게 위에서 언급한 지도에 관한 일반적인 정보들을 서술하려고 합니다. 그리고 왜 이런 오류들이 최대한 빨리 수정되어야 하는지에 대한 이유도 알려드리고자 합니다. 먼저 첫 번째와 두 번째 오류에 관해서 만약 타군 전시회에서 ‘프랑스’라는 국가명과 인접 국가와의 경계선이 표시되지 않고, 독일, 벨기에, 스위스, 스페인 등 인접국의 경계와 명칭만 표시된다면 귀하는 어떤 기분이 들까요? 귀하께서 받을 그 터무니없는 느낌은 한국인과 제 자신이 받을 느낌입니다. 프랑스는 시민혁명을 통해 일어난 나라이지 않습니까? 한국인들도 지난 세기 일제 강점으로부터 독립을 이뤘고, 한 민족 사이에 슬픈 전쟁의 역사가 있었음에도 불구하고 우리는 스스로 민주화를 이룩했기 때문에 한국인으로서의 자부심을 갖고 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 전시회에서 가만히 두고 있는 이러한 터무니없는 오류는 박물관이 마치 한국과 한국인을 무시하는 것처럼 보일 수 있습니다.

또한 2019년 8월 뉴욕주 교육부는 동해를 포함하는 교육과정을 업데이트했습니다. 이전에는 뉴욕 주 교육과정에서 그 바다를 특정 이름으로 지칭해서 부르는 명칭이 없었습니다. 이제는 ‘동해’와 ‘일본해’ 두 명칭 모두가 포함된 내용이 그 지역의 민감성과 역사적 문제와 함께 학생들에게 가르쳐질 것입니다. 이에 관해서는 아래 사이트의 정보를 참고해주세요.

From a lecture in school, I had learned that French students do not learn History and Geography separately. From the Third Republic, the history of History and Geography programs have evolved with the ministries, and the subject 'Histoire Geographie' seems like one of the pride that French people have with their country and sovereignty. As France interprets your history above your current border, I believe that it is way of finding the spatiotemporal meaning of history and geography in the historic-political concept as borders between countries have changed throughout the centuries.
I believe that an internationally renowned national museum of France with a million visitors an year, with the reputation and prestige should not neglect errors regarding other countries and cultures. Even if you rule out the reasons for correcting the errors I have mentioned above, the most worrying thing to me is that the world citizens, students, and the future generations visiting your museum will be given misinformation about Korea. One of the values your museum is pursuing is to create bridges between cultures. If that bridge is built with untruthful facts, the bridge will not last long enough. If these errors are constantly neglected on your exhibition, I believe that it is a huge mistake for the image and the credibility your museum provides.
Therefore, I urge that you rectify the errors from your exhibition, and post an accurate map that provides correct information regarding the Northeast Asia and Korea. I am looking forward to visit your museum when this pandemic is over, and also would like to see the revised version of the map of the exhibition I have mentioned. If you do so, world citizens and students can get accurate information regarding Korea and Northeast Asia.
