Hello, I am Sungho Park, a reporter of Dokdo Cyber Press. I am an ardent user of this website and I appreciate the accurate information about ocean provided by you. However, I would like to ask you a favor about a map in your website.

According to the map of your website, the sea between Korea and Japan is named “Sea of Japan’. The sea between Japan and Korea is written as the Sea of Japan. I also saw a note under your website that the United States government only approves the name, Sea of Japan. However, there is no historical nor policitical evidence that the sea belongs to Japan. East Sea is not only surrounded by Japan but other countries including Korea. 

The name, East Sea has been used by Koreans for aprroximately 2000 years, and the name East Sea was also widely used by Western countries until the early 1900s, too. ‘Sea of Japan’ is the product of Japanese imperialism, and it is historically biased to use the name, ‘Sea of Japan.’ There was no mutual agreement between Korea and Japan to use this name and therefore, I highly recommend the name, ‘East Sea’ or at least the simultaneous use of both names, East Sea and Sea of Japan.
