To Whom it may concern, Greetings,
I am Seonwon Kim from South Korea. I am frequently finding out typographical errors in Korean history or territory. Your YouTube channel insists ¡°The Sea of Japan¡° is the sole internationally established name. However, it would be best if I informed you of what you are missing as follows.

Your video clip says that Korea suddenly raised the naming issue in 1992. However, the 'East Sea' has been a famous name in East Asia for over 2,000 years.
In contrast, Sea of Japan never used the name before the 18th century. After Japan invaded Korea in the early 20th century, Japan tried to spread the name internationally.
The fact was that the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) called this sea the Sea of Japan in 1929. During the colonial period, Korea could not insist on any rights against Japan.

I recommend that we call it "East Sea" or "East Sea/Sea of Japan." It is consistent with the recommendation of IHO that marking at the same time for the area where two countries disagree on a single name.
I want to request you to change the name on your maps. I appreciate your patience in reading my letter, and I look forward to hearing a piece of good news from you.
Sincerely, Seonwon Kim |
